Update 12/10/2021: If you land on this post in the future after searching to find out what this process is then I've some news.

I've had confirmation from the Microsoft Security's twitter, the one which is verified and posts regular updates and answers questions about security for windows and they have confirmed the Microsoft Malware Protection Copy Accelerator Utility is something added as of September and its a legitimate file of Windows Defender.

They also said they are working on updating the public documentation on what processes Windows Defender runs so clearly that is why I and others could find no information on this process.

I have asked if the behaviour of the process running some days and not others is normal and waiting a reply but at this point I'm pretty happy to just ignore it if it runs as it has a very small performance footprint (under 5mbs of memory) to actually cause issues for your system. I've also not noticed any high cpu usage when it runs like antimalware process sometimes does so I'm not to bothered by it now.

Its been abit of slog, but atleast finally got some info out of Microsoft about this, just the typical of something new being added and not being documentated properly on MS's end.

So yesterday I noticed a new background process running, namely Microsoft Malware Protection Copy Accelerator Utility (mpcopyaccelerator.exe). I haven't seen this process before so naturally I tried to google it to find out if it was some type of malware. Specifically, according to the properties tab it was created on 9th of September for my system and the exe file is under Windows defender's platform folders.

There is only about 3 search results for this process and the exe so I've come here to ask, what exactly is it?

I've done a virustotal scan on it and its confirmed to be a legitimate file from Microsoft, its digitally signed by microsoft and it seems to run whenever windows defender is doing a definition update and requires atleast a restart or 2 of the system to have it not show up in the background processes.

You can't right click and end task in task manager either as it gives a access denied warning even on admin level user account.

I just like to know what it is and why its running/what it does. Also because so little search results on it it seems like it something which hasn't been rolled out in mass or doesn't pop up very often for people.

So does anyone have a idea?

Edit: Did some follow up DM's with MS and they said its been passed on and being looked at but no timeframe, not sure if this has been abit of a cob off response from them but who knows.

If you can as per my newest post, pop up your own feedback hub reports about this issue so it gets more traction, little else we can do.

This is the response I got on a follow up DM:

"In events like this your query would be best answered by our developers on out feedback hub. They can provide a detailed and accurate description about our mpcopyaccelerator.exe and Microsoft Malware Protection Copy Accelerator Utility background process. We are hoping for your cooperation. If you need assistance to any Microsoft services, please don't hesitate to update us. "

I can't personally check the feedback hub as I run a local admin account and I don't want to associate my computer with a microsoft account and have a bunch of stuff break/get fiddled with by the microsoft account linking on a 5 year old machine.

If others want to want to follow this approach then please do, I've been pretty much stopped at this point by the reply above in the DM.

Edit: As of 8th of October the issue still persists for me, there has been another windows defender platform update on the 6th of october but the process still runs, the new version of the file still checks out as microsoft verified file but I've been unable to get any real answer of this. I've now reached out to Microsofts own security account on twitter as replies from them seem to be less brushed off when people have asked them questions and will see if I can get any further with this.

It is beyond fustrating that the issue hasn't been resolved and still keeps happening and still left in the unknown about it, clearly it is a new background process of windows defender and its supposed to run and its legit, but the fact it doesn't shutdown after done and some days it does run and others it does is doing my head in.

Maybe I've ultimately become abit to obsessed over it, but these kind of background processes are the things which lead to backdoor exploits happening when they un-intentionally run or don't work properly and it takes to they really blow up to be noticed.

Section A – MpCopyAccelerator Removal Steps For Windows OS

Step 4. Remove malicious files created by MpCopyAccelerator or related malware.

1. Hit Windows + R keys at the same time to open Run window and input a regedit and click OK:

2. In the Registry Editor, hit Windows key + F key together to open Find window → Enter virus name → Press Enter key to start search.

Step 5. Reset Web Browsers to remove Hijackers Brought by MpCopyAccelerator.

Chrome

Reset Chrome:

1. Click the Chrome menu button, represented by three horizontal lines;
2. Click Settings when the drop-down menu appears;

• Click on “Restore settings to their default values”
• Click on the “Reset” button in the new confirmation window that opens.

Firefox

Reset Firefox:

1. Click the menu button of firefox, represented by three horizontal lines;
2. Click on “Help“ button when the drop-down menu appears;
3. Click on “Troubleshooting Information“ from the Help menu;
4. Click the “Refresh Firefox” button in the upper-right corner of the “Troubleshooting Information” page.
5. Click on the “Refresh Firefox” button in the new confirmation window that opens.

Reset IE :

1. Open Internet Explorer, click on the gear icon in the upper-right part of your browser, then select “Internet Options“.
2. Now select the “Advanced” tab, then click on the “Reset” button
3. In the “Reset Internet Explorer settings” section, select the “Delete personal settings” checkbox, then click on the “Reset” button.
